Kilauea Volcano
August 18th, 2009. A view of the eruption zone, looking downslope. The smoking hill is Puu Oo, a 700-foot cone built by explosive eruptions in the 1980s. To the left, the smoking line is the lava tube. The lava tube conducts molten lava to the ocean, 7 miles downslope. The ocean entry, where lava bursts from the tube, is marked by a cloud of steam. Beyond, the Pacific Ocean reaches to the horizon.
